Glassjaw - El Mark
“Who the fuck wants to live forever… anymore?”
Such an awesome song. This song really sealed the deal for Glassjaw being one of my favorite bands. The guitar riffs are literally shredding this entire song. It’s fucking ridiculous! Bass (which I have to mention how badass their bass tones always are… big muff all the way) and drums keeping all the rhythm super solid. Just a bed frame for Daryl to lay down vocals that blow some minds.
I really can’t get over how well Shannon Larkin played drums on Worship & Tribute (This is a B-side off that album apparently) and can’t get over how good his drum tones still sound.
…And obviously Daryl Palumbo is a straight badass. No one mixes singing and screaming as flawlessly as he does. Such a great band. Can’t wait to see them in a few days.
Rivers Cuomo - Can’t Stop Partying
(Does anyone else notice the chord progression is almost identical to Smashing Pumpkin’s - Disarm?)
I love this song, in fact I cannot get it out of my head. I heard it for the first time re-done on the new Weezer record a few days ago… but this is the demo version from his second release of home recordings, and it is really good.
I can’t stop partying… and I won’t stop partying!
Weezer - Perfect Situation
That intro guitar solo is so awesome. Great sustain.
This mix has recently been a constant reference mix for me. Sounds huge with the best impact when the chorus hits.
Great song, great mix.
Third Eye Blind - Never Let You Go
This song is so awesome, and was my song of the day yesterday while making acoustic panels.
I really love the drum tones on this, so snappy. I think the highlight of the song is the bass riff in the chorus. He’s got such good placement and chooses the right notes and moments to play to make it feel really smooth.
And doesn’t that guitar track in the intro sound so good?!
Mew - Beach
This is a Rich Costey production and mix… he’s my favorite.
Everything about this song is really solid. The drumbeat (That awesome dynamic Hi Hat) is such a catchy beat. Really smart to open the song with more sparse drums and then slam into that beat. I read a small interview about how Rich gobo-ed the shit out of the drums to get them to sound “huge.” Dead rooms are my favorite to track drums in.
The vocals also need some appreciation. I think it’s really smart he sings in a low baritone and then a high falsetto octave on top. Makes it sound really airy and thick.
Good band, good record… check it out.
In a candid, confrontational letter to Scientology top brass that’s just been published online, Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis (Crash) details the abuses and cover-ups that have forced him to to leave Scientology after 35 years. It’s a must-read.
